Manchester United have banned their players from using social networking sites like Facebook and Twitter. A message was posted on the club’s website explaining that its players do not belong to online social networks.

It is said that manager Sir Alex Ferguson ordered a clampdown to plug news leaks. Twitter and Football do not mix well as it is evident from the cases of Darrent Bent and Ryan Babel. Last year Bent had created a controversy while ranting about Tottenham’s management and this year Babel has been publicly showing his frustration over Liverpool and manager Rafa Benitez.

Manchester United is already fighting the serious debt issue, and Fergie surely doesn’t want any sensitive information to be leaked out to public. To control this he has ordered his players to skip Twitter and Facebook.

As a result of this ban, Manchester United have taken control of the Twitter accounts of Ryan Giggs, Darren Fletcher and Wayne Rooney (which were genuine). They have also forced the Facebook accounts of Rio Ferdinand, Wes Brown and Ryan Giggs to go off-line.
