Alexander Büttner has completed his move to Manchester United after completing his medical and agreeing personal terms, the club have announced.

Büttner has signed a five-year contract which will keep him at the club until 2017. His transfer from Vitesse Arnhem is understood to have cost in the region of £3.9m.

Sir Alex Ferguson said: "Alexander is one of the best young left backs in Europe and we're delighted to sign him. He's someone we've been watching for a while now. He gives us some really exciting options in that position."

Alexander Büttner said: "Joining Manchester United is one of the best days of my life. It's a team I have admired for many years now and I can't wait to join my teammates and play my part in helping the club be successful."

Büttner has been primarily signed to provide back-up for Patrice Evra in the left-back position. Last season was perhaps the worst season for Evra in a United shirt. His sudden dip in form had raised serious questions about his defensive abilities.

Moreover, Fabio da Silva has been loaned out to QPR for the entire season and this should be a good opportunity for Büttner to impress everyone in his debut Manchester United season. If he shows good progress, perhaps, we may see him playing regular football for United in the next 2-3 years.
