Robin van Persie gave Sir Alex Ferguson an extraordinary game to witness as the Manchester United manager’s 1000th English league game with a 3-2 victory over Southampton.

The home team struck the first blood when Rickie Lambert scored the first goal with a powerful header to beat Anders Lindegaard. van Persie quickly equalized and looked impressive, but Southampton looked very sharp and kept attacking United.

Their persistent efforts paid off when they took the lead in the 55th minute, this time Morgan Schneiderlin scoring with a thumping header. Bad defending from United this time as the back four looked clueless and totally out-of-sync.

However, van Persie struck twice in the dying moments to complete his first Manchester United hat-trick and to turn the game at St. Mary's upside down. Perhaps, his winning goal would save him from getting embarrassed as the Dutchman had missed a penalty, trying a disguised chip that ended in embarrassment.

There's no doubt van Persie showed why Sir Alex splashed out 24 million Euros to sign him from Arsenal. He's a goal scoring machine and I'm sure today's game will be a defining moment in Manchester United's season.
