Two first half goals from Wayne Rooney appeared to have handed Manchester United the win over their local rivals but a re-charged Man Shitty played some of the best football in the second half to make this match thrilling.

It was Robin van Persie, playing in his first Manchester derby, who stamped his name with a whipped free kick in stoppage time to hand United an impressive victory.

This win takes United six points clear at the top of the Premier League table. Here are some pics that describe what the win means for everyone who support the Red Devils.

I was surprised when I read in the morning about Scholes coming out of his retirement and rejoining United as a player. That made me wonder whether Scholes is the new Henrik Larsson that Sir Alex is trying to create to see-off an injury crisis at Old Trafford.

If you remember, Sir Alex signed Henrik Larsson on loan from January - March in 2007. That time too, we had injury problems and our strikers were not scoring too many goals.

Its interesting that Larsson made his United debut against Aston Villa in the FA Cup Third Round on 7 January 2007 while Scholes made his debut (after coming out of retirement) against Man City in the FA Cup Third Round as well.

Larsson played only 13 games for United and that was enough to win the manager who was full of praise for the striker back then. Today, he sees Scholes in similar light and says,
It’s fantastic that Paul has made this decision. It’s always sad to see great players end their careers, but especially so when they do it early. But he has kept himself in great shape and I always felt that he had another season in him. It’s terrific to have him back.

The mere presence of Paul Scholes in United's midfield is going to give other teams a shiver. I just hope he stays fit and doesn't join rest of the boys on the casualty table.

Welcome back Paul.

Sir Alex Ferguson's smile faded after losing at home to Chelsea, a defeat in which Manchester United lost the leadership of the Premier League. United were also eliminated from the UEFA Champions League after Bayern Munich knocked them out on their own turf.

Its surprising that United were unable to keep their lead in both legs against the Germans. First, they lost the 1-0 lead in Munich and then allowed Bayern to progress on away goals even after leading 3-0 at Old Trafford.

The Red Devils have dominated the Premier League for three years with three consecutive titles. The fourth one looks very difficult after Chelsea extended their lead to four points. Having dominated the season with performances of Wayne Rooney, United would now want to win the Manchester Derby.

The last meeting between these two Manchester clubs in the Premier League saw United with their noses ahead. It was Michael Owen’s injury time strike that helped them to beat Man City 4-3.

Manchester United now has to win all their remaining matches to at least challenge for the Premier League. One aspect to consider if you're a football gambling fan is that Wayne Rooney has declared himself fit after missing last Sunday's game against Blackburn. So he should play a major role to silence the "noisy neighbours."

Its been a tough season for the Red Devils who have been constantly plagued with injuries to their star players. Be it Ferdinand, Vidic, Giggs, Rooney, Hargreaves or VDS. With the season coming to an end now, I think Sir Alex would try to motivate his players by saying, “Let’s win the Manchester Derby now!”
