The biggest challenge for David Moyes after taking the hot seat at Manchester United has been to improve his midfield. After working hard during the summer to make a big signing, he was only able to bring in Marouane Fellaini who is yet to assert himself at Old Trafford.
There’s no doubt Moyes is desperately looking for a genuine box-to-box player and interestingly he has been looking to Spain to find his midfield inspiration. During summer, Moyes chased Spanish players such as Real Madrid’s Sami Khedira, Athletic Bilbao's Ander Herrera, Barcelona's Cesc FĂ bregas and Thiago Alcântara but could not bring any of them to England.
And now, Xabi Alonso and Andres Iniesta have become the latest targets for Manchester United.
Reports in Spain already claim that United have already opened up discussions with Alonso whose contract at Real Madrid is set to expire at the end of the season. The 31-year old had a great time in England when he played for Liverpool. Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho is monitoring Alonso's situation and is very interested in bringing the Madrid man to Stamford Bridge.
The case with Andres Iniesta is a little complex. We all know his career-long Camp Nou association but there are reports that claim he is fixed in a contract row with Barcelona. The 29-year-old midfield maestro’s move to Old Trafford seems very unlikely to me, but you never know what might happen in football.
There are also reports of the United chasing Atletico Madrid star Koke. The 21-year-old has been hailed as the new Xavi.
The Red Devils are surely going to face a great challenge after it was confirmed that Michael Carrick may not play again this year due to an Achilles problem. With several important games to come during the busy Christmas period, United will definitely be looking to boost their midfield.
Who do you think should Man United sign to strengthen their midfield?
