Wayne Rooney has been named the new Manchester United captain by manager Louis van Gaal, with Darren Fletcher named as vice-captain.
Louis van Gaal said:
For me it's always very important the choice of captain. Wayne has shown a great attitude towards everything he does. I have been very impressed by his professionalism and his attitude to training and to my philosophy. He is a great inspiration to the younger members of the team and I believe he will put his heart and soul into his captaincy role.Darren Fletcher will become the vice-captain. Darren is a natural leader and will captain the team when Wayne isn't playing. Darren is a very experienced player and a very popular member of the dressing room, I know he will work well alongside Wayne.
Several United fans and pundits were expecting Robin van Persie to lead the Red Devils in the coming season, particularly because of his good working relation with manager Louis van Gaal. However, I think LVG has been smart in appointing Rooney over RVP as it will put a huge responsibility on the English striker, so much so that he won't consider quitting United.
On being announced the new captain of Manchester United, Wayne Rooney said:
It is a huge honour for me – and for my family – to be named captain of this great club. It is a role I will perform with great pride. Team spirit has always been very high in our dressing room and I am very grateful to the manager for the faith he has shown in me. I look forward to leading the team out on Saturday at our first match of the new season.
Manchester United will start the new BPL season hosting Swansea City at Old Trafford on Saturday, August 16.

Roy Hodgson today announced his 23 man squad for World Cup 2014 finals in Brazil. As expected, four Manchester United players have made it to the list.
Phil Jones, Chris Smalling, Danny Welbeck and Wayne Rooney will be representing England for this summer’s FIFA World Cup in Brazil. Another two United players, Michael Carrick and Tom Cleverley have both been named on a seven-man standby list.
All the players will report for duty on 19 May, when the Three Lions will fly to Portugal for a week-long training camp before playing out three friendly matches against Peru, Ecuador and Honduras.
The England World Cup 2014 squad will then travel to South America to face Italy, Uruguay and Costa Rica in Group D of the prestigious tournament.

Wayne Rooney has finally put speculation around his Manchester United future to rest by signing a 4 year contract extension with the Red Devils. It is now official that Rooney will stay at the club until June 2019, giving him an "outstanding chance" to become club's all-time goalscorer.
The new deal also provides Rooney an opportunity to become a club ambassador when he retires from the game. I think the best motivation for Wazza would be to become United's leading all-time goalscorer. Currently he has scored 208 goals from 430 games, which puts him fourth in the club's all-time goalscorer list behind Jack Rowley (211), Denis Law (237) and Bobby Charlton (249).
After signing the contract extension, Rooney explained why the future is bright at Old Trafford by saying,
I am made up to be staying at United. In August I will have been at the club for 10 years and during that time I have played with some fantastic players and won everything that I hoped I would when I first signed. I now have the chance as one of the club's senior players to help the younger players coming through and to be a part of another great United team.
I am really excited to be a part of the club's future and want to thank David Moyes and Ed Woodward for their belief and support in me. I am convinced that this is the start of another successful chapter in Manchester United's history.
After all the drama last summer surrounding Wazza's future, with Chelsea aggressively pursuing him, it's a great news United have retained one of their best players. Without a doubt, for Wayne Rooney and Manchester United, it's deja vu.
Last summer, Chelsea made every possible attempt to lure Man United striker Wayne Rooney to London but couldn't succeed.
Since then, Rooney has been in fine form and scoring regularly in the absence of hit man Robin Van Persie. As soon as the January transfer window opened, there have been reports of Chelsea preparing 30 million bid for Rooney.
Ed Woodward will soon be opening negotiations with Wazza's agent over renewing his contract which runs until 2015. After failing to acquire several transfer targets in the summer, Woodward is under extreme pressure and he will make every possible attempt to stop Rooney from joining their title rivals.
Since the arrival of Jose Mourinho at Stamford Bridge, Chelsea haven't look very confident. Obviously, they are struggling with scoring goals and they need a goal scoring machine and Rooney fits the bill perfectly. Wayne Rooney has been declared as Manchester United's Player of the Month for November by fans. After an excellent performance, Wazza was an unanimous choice and it was justified by his landslide victory in the official poll conducted by ManUtd.com
Earlier in September, Rooney had won the same award after a string of excellent performances with five goals in all competitions. While accepting the the award, he said,
It's great to be recognized by the fans. I'm delighted with that and it's important I keep trying to do well for the team. But I'm enjoying my football and doing well, so I'll keep working hard and hopefully continue to be successful on the pitch.
We hope Rooney continues to keep up his good form because we now need him more than before after United lost to Everton last night, drifting 12 points from leaders Arsenal.
Manchester United will host Barclays Premier League table-toppers Arsenal in an exciting football tussle this weekend. The Red Devils will definitely go for a win to continue their good form in the domestic league and close the gap on the leaders.
After a dull draw against Real Sociedad in the Champions League fixture during mid-week, David Moyes will definitely be under pressure to deliver a positive result in this crucial home fixture. Unfortunately, United are at such a point in the season that even a single loss now will (almost) ensure we won't retain our title this season because Arsenal would be 11 points clear.
Gary Pallister has described this game as a 'titanic' tussle. While he is positive of United's chances against the Gunners and believes the Reds can handle the pressure because they must have learned from the early part of the season.
There is no doubt Arsenal have started this season positively and they are playing the best football at the moment. However, Wayne Rooney is confident the home team will beat Arsene Wenger's men and close the gap on the leaders.

Wayne Rooney who has been enjoying the finest season of his career for Manchester United has added another achievement by winning the PFA Player Of The Year award. Rooney won the award by comfortably beating off competition from Cesc Fabregas, Didier Drogba and Carlos Tévez.
Rooney missed Saturday's victory against Spurs due to a groin injury that he picked up in training. Manchester United confirmed, "fatigue" was another cause that kept Rooney out of the tie. The wonder kid was also nominated for the Young Player of the Year award which he had won in 2005 and 2006. However, this honour went to Aston Villa’s James Milner this time.
By winning the PFA Player Of The Year award, Rooney has ensured that a Red Devil has won this award for the fourth consecutive time. It was Ryan Giggs who won it last year and Cristiano Ronaldo had bagged the same award twice before that.
The 24 year-old striker credited Sir Alex Ferguson's role for his development and backed him to remain the boss at Old Trafford. He said,
Sir Alex has really brought me on as a player since I joined United. His hunger passes through to the players. It’s great to see that he’s pushing 70 and hasn’t changed a bit. I’m sure he’ll be here for a long time yet.
It was earlier said that Wayne Rooney would miss the remaining part of the season due to his groin problem. However, he explained his situation and said,
The groin will be fine for the World Cup, there are no worries about that. I’m hoping to play for United in the last game of the season.

Wayne Rooney has been in excellent form for Manchester United this season. He is probably playing the best football of his life and is naturally enthusiastic about it. But he had to pay a heavy price for being over-enthusiastic as Sir Alex Ferguson has publicly accused Rooney of jeopardizing United's season.
Sir Alex Ferguson was incensed that Rooney defied him by not pulling out of England's midweek friendly against Egypt. Rooney had been troubled with a knee injury for several weeks and went into the game with an injury. Also, he virtually played the entire game and has aggravated his injury. He now appears doubtful for the game against Wolves today due to swollen knee.
The Scot was so angry with his star striker that he accused him of being irresponsible and jeopardising Manchester United's chances of silverware. Fergie has been battling with player injuries this season and with the season approaching climax, he wants to ensure that his best team remains fit. With 28 goals already, it is obvious why Fergie is desperate to protect Rooney.
Carling Cup final against Villa saw Michael Owen get injured and he has been ruled out for the reminder of the season. United’s attacking options are further limited due to Dimitar Berbatov's erratic form and unavailability of Daniel Welbeck who’s on loan at Preston North End. Mame Biram Diouf did score a goal on his debut but he is new to English football.

The blockbuster fixture between Manchester United and Arsenal proved to be a delightful one as United posted a famous victory at The Emirates by defeating Gunners 3-1. I say a famous victory because this is the first time Manchester United have defeated Arsenal at The Emirates in the league.
The build up for this game was centered on the fantastic form of Wayne Rooney and how Sol Campbell could prevent him from scoring. However, the old man did not start and Rooney scored to complete his century of goals for Manchester United.
The first half belonged to United as they looked sharp and determined by keeping the possession and creating chances. Carrick and Scholes were absolutely brilliant in the center of the park and Nani was flying on the right wing. With such a dominating performance, it was only a matter of time for United to score.
The goal finally came from the newly born Nani who won a two on one challenge and edged past Clichy and Nasri and then tricked Denilson in the box to loop the ball over the Arsenal goalie. The ball kissed Almunia’s fingers and landed in the net. Though it was termed as an own goal, but I think it should have been credited to Nani as it was going to land in the net anyway.
The relief on the face of Nani clearly showed how satisfied he was with his improved performance. His confidence was sky high and he was seen fighting for the ball everywhere. His determination paid off as Manchester United produced a marvellous counter-attacking move which saw Nani assist Rooney to score his 100th goal for the Red Devils.

Wayne Rooney scored a sensational four-timer to send Manchester United top of the Premier League as the Red Devils beat Hull 4-0. Everyone is praising Rooney for his solo efforts (even I admire that) but I think this game provided some other good news as well.
Return of Rio Ferdinand
The game against Hull marked the return of Rio Ferdinand after a 3 month long absence. The United skipper had been out of action since October 2009 and was ruled out until 2010. However he marked his return and played the entire 90 minutes which did look as if Rio has retained his form and could help his manager who is worried about their defense.
I am glad Rio returned at the right time as he may be handed the responsibility to monitor Carlos Tevez when United face City in the Carling Cup semi final.
Michael Owen got a start
I was initially surprised to see Owen starting, especially after the awesome form which Berbatov had shown in the previous games. But Fergie wants to help Owen to get on the plane to South Africa and hence he paired the two English strikers up front.
To be honest, Owen did look fine. Though he missed some easy chances which came his way but overall I think he played fine. And when Rooney is scoring goals for fun, his striking partner has to act as a mere supporter by making assists.
Nani may have OT future
I don't know what others thought but I think Nani had a fantastic game against Hull at a mutinous Old Trafford. After his bust up with Sir Alex Ferguson, I thought the Portuguese will never feature for United, but he has featured in a few games. And his performance against Hull was one of his best ever at OT. Probably, Nani has future at Manchester United.

That's how the score sheet looked featuring the name of Wayne Rooney who scored all four goals for Manchester United. The wonder kid took his goals tally for the season to 20 in 28 matches and is just three short of his best-ever return.
The return of VDS, Ferdinand and Evans does make the back four much stronger. Is this the time that things will start to turn in United's favor? What say folks?
Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney is reportedly set to become the highest paid footballer in the history of the Premier League. He will be offered a mega deal to make him the richest player in England as well as to keep Barcelona at bay.
Manchester United is planning to offer a new contract to Wayne Rooney, who has been vocal about his intentions to stay at Old Trafford. There are a number of clubs who are chasing the English striker, most notably Barcelona.
The Spanish champions are showing more and more interest to sign the England international with each passing day. Rooney’s ex-teammate at Old Trafford, Cristiano Ronaldo has also invited him to Spain to play for Real Madrid. But the 24-year-old has remained fiercely loyal to the club and has time and again said to remain a Red Devil till he retires.
The terms of the new contract are yet to be finalized and negotiations may start somewhere around February. According to a report in the News of the World, Manchester United will offer a whopping deal of £170,000-a-week wages to Wayne Rooney. The report also says that the new deal will see the father of Kai Wayne Rooney own image rights worth £45,000-a-week.
If Rooney is offered such a high paying contract, he could become the owner of the most lucrative contract in the history of the club, as well as the English Premier League. It goes without saying that United will be keen to wrap up an agreement before the 2010 World Cup. A successful summer in South Africa for Wayne Rooney could see his value sky rocket and evoke serious interest from other clubs.

This is the simple story of Cristiano Ronaldo who moved to Real Madrid this summer and leaving his United teammates who still miss him.
One of his teammates (not a buddy) Wayne Rooney recently said that Ronaldo is irreplaceable. He went on to say that he is missing the influence of Cristiano Ronaldo on the Old Trafford outfit.

I do not agree with Rooney's views. I appreciate what Ronaldo did for United and also understand the impact he had during his six-year spell in Manchester. The talented Portugal international bagged a staggering 118 goals in just 292 appearances for the Red Devils and went on to help United win the Champions League and the league title thrice.
Let's be practical. CR7 is a closed chapter now for Man Utd. He's gone. So let's stop cribbing about it and give the new guys more authority and freedom so that they can deliver the same goods. After all nobody's departure has ever hurt United.

Manchester United travel to Anfield tomorrow to face a Liverpool side that is struggling with injuries and poor results. The importance of this game is known to both teams and the only result each of them will hope for would be a win.
Last season the Reds completed a double over United that included a 4-1 hammering of the Red Devils at Old Trafford. Sir Alex Ferguson has refuted suggestions that his side go into Sunday's trip to Liverpool with a point to prove after last season's defeats against the Merseysiders.
A victory for the visiting side will help them strengthen their lead at the top of the table and put more pressure on Chelsea who play Blackburn Rovers. However, this result would put more pressure on the shoulders of Benitez whose side have lost the last 4 games in all competitions. To make matters worse for him, star players Fernando Torres and Steven Gerrard are nursing injuries and will have until match-day to prove their fitness for the clash with Manchester United.
Even Red Devils are concerned with injuries as JS Park has been ruled out and Darren Fletcher along with Wayne Rooney look doubtful. The wonder kid has been sidelined for the past two weeks with a calf injury sustained while playing for England in Ukraine on Oct 10. Recently, Fergie too admited that Rooney - whose wife Coleen is expecting the birth of the couple’s first child on Sunday - could yet miss the traditionally explosive clash with the club’s age-old rivals.
Rooney's absence will mean that Michael Owen will partner Dimitar Berbatov upfront leading United's attack. It will be a treat to watch Owen score against his old club at Anfield but to be honest, I don't see that happening at least tomorrow. He will definitely be jeered and boo-ed by the Kops, but Sir Alex feels that Owen will deal with Liverpool fans.
No matter who scores or who plays or what happens tomorrow, I am only relishing a great game of football. Manchester United and Liverpool games are always intense and the results of their last 10 meetings at Anfield show the same.

Manchester United look confident to book their place in the last 16 of the Champions League after their win against Trotters on Saturday. Though they were not at their best but come Wednesday and United will have to play at their best if they are to repeat their last year's success.
United have already won their 2 group games and comfortably top their Group. Wednesday's Champions League tie against CSKA Moscow will see them travel to the Russian capital without their star players. The Red Devils will be without Wayne Rooney, Ryan Giggs, Darren Fletcher, Park Ji-sung and Patrice Evra when they travel to Luzhniki Stadium in Moscow.
I think Sir Alex Ferguson would not want to risk any of his players in Moscow as he will be concentrating on Sunday's Premier League clash with arch-rivals Liverpool. With 5 players already injured, Fergie will be very cautious in the build up to their game against CSKA Moscow.
The Luzhniki Stadium has been lucky for Manchester United as they were crowned European Champions two years ago at the same venue. I still remember that emphatic win against Chelsea that saw United win the Champions League.
But with the unavailability of their star players will Manchester United find it difficult to beat the Russian outfit on their home turf?
Manchester United climbed to the top of the table in the Barclays English Premier League after defeating Bolton 2-1 at Old Trafford. The defeat of Chelsea at Aston Villa means United get a 1 point advantage over the Blues.
The game started perfectly for United as they were a goal ahead within the opening 5 minutes. The game looked pretty much one sided once the home team had scored their second. Antonia Valencia netting his first goal in the Red shirt at the Theater of Dreams.
After scoring 2 goals, Manchester United were looking very comfortable as they kept winning possession and troubling the Bolton defense. But Jussi Jaaskelainen was in terrific form as he made a series of brilliant saves. And that resulted in winning a lot of corners for United. It was sad to see that United could not score a single goal from more than 5 corner kicks.
I felt Man Utd got a bit complacent towards the end and that's when Bolton picked up there chance. Matt Taylor scored with a header and the last 15 minutes were interesting as Bolton tried to snatch an equalizer while the home team tried to seal the game with another goal. But it was 2 -1 to Manchester United.
Today's game saw the return of Edwin van der Sar in United goal and Michael Owen starting with Berbatov upfront due to the absence of Wayne Rooney. To be frank, Owen never looked in great form and failed to deliver the same performance that helped United win the Manchester Derby last month.
This win and Chelsea's defeat at Villa Park means the Red Devils comfortably sit at the top of the table. But the comfort level is very narrow as they lead the Blues by only one point and if United doesn't improve soon, then I feel we might lose the lead. Teams like Arsenal, Spurs, Villa and City are making the competition tough with back to back victories and that should really trigger Man Utd to show their real class to lift the premier league for the fourth consecutive time.
Manchester United have a real test tomorrow when they play against their local rivals. Though, United manager Sir Alex Ferguson considers Liverpool as their local rivals and not Manchester City, but a derby is a derby. And tomorrow, the red and the blue part of Manchester will unite at the Theater of Dreams to witness a classic match.
The reason I feel this match will be interesting is because City have had a fabulous start to their season. With more than $120 million spent on transfers, City are seen as one of the top challengers for the league title. I know this will never happen but it would be great if United thrash them tomorrow and bring them to the ground.
With a superb victory against Spurs, coupled with a perfect start to their Champions League campaign in Turkey, United are looking strong. Rio Ferdinand's injury is a major concern but I guess Vidic and Evans should be able to guard the defense if Rio misses out. Also, with Wayne Rooney is outstanding form, I expect him to score goals tomorrow.
As far as City are concerned, they are completely handicapped after losing four of their main strikers to injuries and suspensions. Roque Santa Cruz, Robinho, Emmanuel Adebayor and ex- United player Carlos Tevez are all unavailable for Mark Hughes for the derby game. And it seems he will have to rely on Craig Bellamy and Benjani Mwaruwari up front.
It has been really very disheartening to see City fans lose their minds and go insane. Manchester City fans suck so much that they have started to tease United fans by sporting a poster of Carlos Tevez that states "Welcome to Manchester" after he switched colours in the summer. WTF! City - you are losers.

Gary Neville believes that wonder kid Wayne Rooney can one day break Sir Bobby Charlton's record of scoring goals for Manchester United. And this comes after Rooney claimed to remain with the Red Devils for life.
There's no doubt that Rooney has got immense talent in him. And Neville praised Rooney's attitude and work ethics and hence sees him become one of Old Trafford's greatest players. Currently he has 102 goals in his kitty and needs many more goals to beat Sir Bobby's record of 249. But Wayne is just 23 and has got a lot of time with him and considering the form he has been exhibiting for his club and country, he might well score more than 300 goals.
His present team-mate Ryan Giggs eclipsed Sir Charlton's appearance record in the 2008 Champions League final against Barcelona. Rooney currently sits 18th on the all-time goal scorers list behind Ruud van Nistelrooy and Cristiano Ronaldo.
Even Dimitar Berbatov has showered lots of praise on Rooney for his skills and commitment to football. He said that Wayne is the first one to arrive on the training ground and the last one to leave. That shows how much he enjoys his football and his commitment towards learning. Also he is never in the newspapers for whatever reasons, simply because he does not want to become a celebrity. He is a footballer and likes to remain a football player all his life.
Great going Rooney. I hope to see you score more goals this season, especially since Tevez and Ronaldo have left. And I don't trust in the goal scoring abilities of Owen and Berbatov.

Manchester United produced a brilliant second half performance to come back from behind and win against a youthful Arsenal team. This game at the Theater of Dreams, which I suppose was the first test for Sir Alex's team this season. The games so far have been against OKish teams you know, Arsenal is always special.Right from the start, Arsenal looked threatening and controlled the ball very well. United did have 2 very good chances in the first half but as they just blew it away; just like they have been doing it this season so far. And Arsenal punished them for not converting their chances. Andrey Arshavin put the visitors ahead at the end of the first half with a blistering shot that kissed Ben Foster's fingers.
Just seconds before Arshavin scored, he was brought down by Darren Fletcher in the box and the Arsenal players were demanding a penalty. But the referee was spot on - Fletcher had got the ball. Had he been a fraction out, it would have been a penalty.
But a penalty was awarded at the other end of the pitch when Wayne Rooney went down under Manuel Almunia's challenge just before the hour mark. I was surprised to see Rooney take the spot kick, specially with Giggs, Carrick and Nani all available. But the wonder kid duly sent Almunia the wrong way and brought United back into the game.
Arsenal did go into a shell after that and United started to take control of the game. Diaby just lost his concentration due to the pressure when he headed the ball into his own net on a Giggs free-kick. Diaby did get a chance to redeem himself when he smashed a shot past Ben Foster, only to see it go wide.
Finally, the game ended at 2 - 1 and Diaby's own goal wrecked Arsenal's 100% start to the season. As if it was not enough, their manager Arsene Wenger was shown the Red card when he kicked a water bottle on the sidelines. He was frustrated with his boy's performance and just when it looked that Arsenal could grab a point out of the game, Van Persie's goal in the stoppage time was disallowed, courtesy Gallas was offside. Wenger vented out his anger on the poor water bottle and the referee asked him to clear the area.
Wenger did create some scenes before the referee restarted the game and blew his whistle soon after to indicate United's victory. This game saw a great performance from Rooney, Nani and Giggs. With their confidence sky high, Manchester United now need to keep the consistency going since Chelsea and Spurs are looking in great form, winning all their matches so far.

Though it was the second day in the premiership, but United opened their account today at home to entertain their fans. With Chelsea edging past Hull City and Arsenal destructing Everton by a huge margin yesterday, there was some pressure on United. Not because they fear defeat, but because it was United’s first game without Cristiano Ronaldo and Carlos Tevez, who had been the admired boys of the red part of Manchester up till now.
And the champions did not disappoint their fans. The game began at a fast pace with the Red Devils running long distances and causing problems for the Birmingham goalie. But he did pretty well to keep them at bay until Wayne Rooney scored the opening goal with a header cum kick. United dominated possession and focused on their pin-point passing with Scholes and Fletcher being at the heart of the midfield. Darren Fletcher had a great chance to make it 2-0 just before the half time interval; but he made a mockery of a shot that lacked conviction and placement.
Second half began with Giggs coming on for Nani who was knocked down a couple of times in the first frty-five minutes. The veteran did trouble the Birmingham players with his short runs and passes. Even Giggs was very close to score when his precise free-kick was deflected by Jerome. Sir Alex made his final substitutions when he handed Michael Owen his Premier league debut in United colors by replacing Berbatov. Wes Brown too joined his mates on the field after a long gap by replacing Jonny Evans.
All and all, the result of game was as expected. United defeated the visitors but I feel United could have won more convincingly by scoring more goals. Maybe, that’s one issue Sir Alex will address during his post match team talk. What are your thoughts about it?
