Just two weeks have passed since the winter transfer window closed and Manchester United have already started to identify their summer targets.

One of the key positions to be filled during summer will be central defense. With Nemanja Vidic set to leave United at the end of the season and Rio Ferdinand's future at Old Trafford in doubt, David Moyes is eyeing a long term replacement in the centre-back position.

So far, two names have emerged - Mehdi Benatia who currently is at Roma and Raphael Varane who plays for Real Madrid.

Benatia is a 26-year old Moroccan international who joined Roma last summer and his performances this season have impressed several top clubs who are keen to recruit him. Moyes too, may explore this prospect who is believed to be valued at £10m.

Raphael Varane is a 20-year old French international who joined Real Madrid in 2011. He is an exceptional talent and at 20, he's already made his way into the French senior side in 2013.

Manchester United missed out on several high profile names last summer. I wonder whether Moyes will be able to attract big names this summer because United don't look very likely to win any silverware this season. Moreover, they seem likely to miss out on qualifying for next year's Champions League competition as well; until a miraculous turn of events gets them to fourth position in the league.

Currently, they are struggling in Europe's premier competition after losing 2-0 to Olympiakos and they must overturn this result to progress in the next round. To learn about all the upcoming CL matches and see how bookmakers rate each of these games, read more.

With a horrible season for Manchester United so far, the Glazers have promised a £100m transfer war chest for Moyes. So who do you think will be the ideal man to fill Vidic’s boots - Mehdi Benatia or Raphael Varane?
